On May 2023, the research project AVICOM reached its completion milestone, made possible through funding by the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union and Greek national funds through the Operational Program Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, under the call RESEARCH – CREATE – INNOVATE (project code: Τ2ΕΔΚ-03852).
The primary goal of AVICOM was to introduce a groundbreaking solution that establishes a network-centric approach to information dissemination, significantly enhancing situational awareness. This approach simultaneously facilitates effective management and real-time coordination of personnel and resources engaged in civil protection activities during natural disasters. Noteworthy features of the application include its open architecture, cost-effectiveness in implementation, user-friendly simplicity, adaptability for both ground and aerial operations, and its robustness against interference like spoofing.
The final operational and performance evaluation assessments of the prototype system, were impeccably executed at the facilities of the 1st Army Aviation Brigade (1st ΑΑΒ) of the Hellenic Army, in November 2022. INTRACOM DEFENSE (IDE) was responsible for implementing a secure and resilient Flying Ad hoc Network (FANET) for interconnecting aerial assets with the C2 center, as well as developing the C2 center software. IDE had also a key role in determining the security requirements of the system and implementing adequate security mechanisms (TRANSEC and COMSEC) for guaranteeing the system’s operational integrity.
It was a great pleasure and honour for IDE to participate in this journey, along with the rest AVICOM partners: the Hellenic Ministry of Defense (1st ΑΑΒ), the University of Thessaly which was the coordinator of the program and the SME (small and medium-sized enterprise) Inspire Web.
